Pedagogical Sensitivity
TEP supports a pupil-centered view of teaching. Educators must develop an understanding of the primacy of the pupil-teacher relationship and its ethical underpinning while honouring and respecting the needs of each pupil. Educators must have the knowledge, skill, and confidence to adapt and develop curriculum to meet the specific needs of each pupil.
The thing I love about Science is that is it so flexible. I covered Force and Motion and one of my lessons was on push and pull. I read the students a story that showed different ways to move objects by pushing and pulling them. I could have followed up with a worksheet in which the determined if each picture was demonstrating a push or a pull, but what fun would that have been? I decided that this was the perfect opportunity for a cross-curricular lesson.
I gathered up a bunch of equipment such as bouncy balls, scoops and balls, hula hoops, skipping ropes, and scooters. With the help of the students I spread the equipment around the playground in stations. I broke the kids into groups and sent each group to a different station to experiment with the equipment. There were no restrictions (except safety) around what they could do with the equipment. As the experimented I went around and asked them what they were discovering and if they were pushing or pulling. I was pleasantly surprised by how much they could identify. They knew that when they were bouncing the ball they were pushing it, same as when they were shooting hoops. They could also identify that when they threw the ball it was pushing but when they were catching it, it was pulling. When it came to the scooters they knew that if they were sitting on it they would have to pull themselves forwards but push themselves backwards, and if they had a rope someone could pull them with it.
This was one of my best lessons because it connect with different types of learners. The activity in combination with the book connected with auditory, visual and kinesthetic learners. I believe that they will remember this lesson and the topic of force and motion because I made it fun, engaging, and related it their everyday lives.
